The longer a life, the challenge is not the distance between destinations, but the difficulty of travelling light. My soul’s a portmanteau packed full, one half filled with what was, the other with what is, what should be.

About This Quote

The word portmanteau is derived from the French word for suitcase (porte-manteau). The suitcase, the original portmanteau, was a bag that had two or more compartments. Its purpose was to hold all of the clothing and belongings that were needed for a journey. This concept of a bag with more than one compartment came to mean a type of word in which a meaning is added to a word by using a different part of speech in its place.

In the case of lines 2 and 3 in this quote, the words “what was” and “what is” are used as they are in this type of portmanteau. The idea is that when you add these parts to a word that they add meaning to the object being talked about. In this case, the message being conveyed is that life is filled with change and it’s easy to lose yourself in your thoughts if you don’t focus on what’s going on around you.
